The Mozilla has announced the first beta version of Firefox 4, the next generation of its cross-platform web browser, promising “dozens of major features and improvements” to the browser.
Firefox 4 will bring a host of new features, and the first full beta release will showcase the biggest change, a big change to the user interface.
The beta features a Feedback add-on which will let users quickly and effectively report bugs and other information back to Mozilla, which has promised to publish new updates on an almost weekly basis.
“Firefox 4 Beta 1 includes dozens of major features and improvements– by testing them early we’ll be able to respond to your feedback for future versions of Firefox,” blogged Mozilla.
“Also, if you have Windows 7 or Windows Vista, the Menu bar has been replaced with a single Firefox button so you can get to the most used options with just one click.”
Taking the beta for a spin, one enhancement is immediately apparent – the speed. The rendering of web pages is instantaneous and video sites such as YouTube load up in record time.
The beta does not include all the intended features of the final release – the Mac and Linux releases have yet to adopt the new menu layout and the synchronisation and privacy controls features are yet to be seen.
Mozilla has added a chart of the new features in Firefox 4 to explain which technologies appear in the latest browser.
