India seems to have come a long way from the time when the only women who were seen smoking openly were vamps in movies.
A new study has found that a growing number of women are smoking, especially in sectors such as the Business Process Outsourcing (BPOs) and media.
The research conducted on employees from BPO and Media fields respectively concluded that 150 out of 1000 women in India are smokers.
8 to 35 percent of women are smokers particularly in media including print, electronic and new media technology following other sectors.
This is much higher than the national average — about 1.5 per cent of Indian women are smokers.
While peer pressure and stress were found to be the most common factors for pushing people to smoke, women in particular had various misplaced notions about smoking.
However, it’s to be believed, these days, for the sake of job status, fashion and bad companions, women are on the top in smoking particularly in BPO sectors, media and top MNCs in India, the study reveals. But very few are addicted to smoking for stress relief, researchers analyzed.
